My week in books #43 - The sunday post

Below are the books that I reviewed and/or read this week -
click on the covers to access the links

First, I'm linking back to The sunday post held by Kim, The Caffeinated Reviewer. Click on the links to access her post and discover plenty of great bloggers who are dying to share their book reviews, and other things, with you !

Second, I don't have much to say.
I spent my time this week mostly reading, taking my daughter to school to avoid public transports and cooking for my family. New decision this week from the government : kids going to high school will attend one week, stay home the next so that the schools won't be as crowded as they now are. There were protests from high school students in France because healthy precautions couldn't be materially respected, they were gased by the police. Nurses protested because emergencies were closed in a Paris hospital during a pandemic, they were fined. I'm very angry.
It's november yet the windows are once again open on the mild weather. I'm drinking jasmin tea while eating vegan pandolce. One cat is playing with dead leaves (shredding them all over the floor...), the other is sleeping on my younger daughter's bed. Let's enjoy life for the moment :)

Alan Bennett : The history boys
Excellent play taking place in the 1980s

Ann Granger : A better quality of murder (Lizzie Martin #3)
Historical mystery set in Victorian London.

Rebecca West : The return of the soldier,
probably one of my best 2020 reads

Book haul : by clicking on the cover below, you can access this novel (to read online or to download with Google play books), it was written in 1850 by Julia Kavanagh and is apparently related to Jane Eyre.

This week, I reviewed this novel, also published in 1850, also related to Jane Eyre. It held some very interesting and unusual themes including physical deformity - usually, in this era, it was looked upon as related to a moral deformity, but not in this novel. The link with Jane Eyre wasn't obvious at first, but I could see a definite resemblance in the later part of the novel - click on the cover to access the review :

Also read and reviewed this week, Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë, maybe not my favourite Brontë novel, but I certainly enjoyed reading it and it made me want to learn more about governesses in that era :

Also, I started building my Brontë mania Youtube playlist, you can find it here. It's definitely still under construction.
And here, you can find my Jane Eyre playlist - more extensive, I started it earlier !
I will keep adding videos in both categories, maybe create others.

I borrowed this from the digital library of Paris. Don't know what it's worth, I just looked up "Brontë" and here it was, so I downloaded it :

A coworker lent me this family saga about a Korean family moving to Japan before the second world war :

Found on the net :

- The funniest pictures of animals for 2020 (really worth a look)

- In this video, Pauline talks about Detective Conan, the manga series, and its ties with Edogawa Rampo, Edgar Allan Poe and Agatha Christie - I learned a few things !

This week, I (re)watched this beautiful, beautiful film :

which made me think about this beautiful song :

Finally, not so beautiful, but absolutely hilarious is the British series Vexed :
This is a very different cop show from what we're used to. Toby Stephens manages to make his character likeable with loads of charm - if you'd just hear about him, you would hate him, lol ! The two main actors have a very good dynamic and just the introduction scene of the first episode is really worth watching ! Season 2 wasn't as good with a different actress, but it caught up by and by and ended up entertaining too. It's available on Netflix in France but can be found on Youtube.

  2. Iza, I am sorry to hear about all the trouble there has been in France because of Covid and the restrictions put in place. My mum recently moved to France, but I think it is relatively quiet in her secluded area of Normandy. Good to see with everything going on you finding joy in small pleasures in life and books. Take care and happy reading! 👋📚🙂

    1. Oooh, Normandy, a very nice région, with pretty houses and good food ! And the sea nearby, of course. I hope you'll be able to visit her. Thanks Jessica :)

  3. We're back in lockdown in England too... It's exhausting. :(
One week in class, one week learning from home, sounds practical.

  4. It's hard to understand some of the decisions being made about the pandemic. Some just don't seem to make sense. Especially school kids being gassed for protesting? Wow. I hope you have a wonderful week.

  5. I am sorry to hear about all the unrest when it comes to COVID. I just wish we could all find a way to get it better under control.

At the moment my cats are playing with their toys, while the kids sleep and I love listening to their little kitten feet on the floor! :)

Have a great week Iza! Happy Reading!

  6. Sounds like a difficult week with all the trouble there. These sure are strange times. I had to look up pandolce as I hadn't heard of that before, it sounds good. I hope you'll have a great week!

  7. I am enjoying the image of you drinking tea and watching the cat play with leaves.

I like the look of your books, especially Bronte Mania.

Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

  8. One week at home and one week at school sounds reasonable. I think a hybrid schedule is a good idea. Sorry to hear you're having issues from Covid. Cases are on the rise everywhere!

Enjoy your Bronte Mania. The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte sounds interesting. Hope you like it. Have a great week! :)

    1. The secret diaries are not bad at all, so far, you feel the writer has studied the Brontë closely- and loves them :) Thanks Rachel !

  9. The used gas on high school kids, that’s horrible. I’m in Scotland we aren’t in total lockdown but we are fully expecting it to happen.

Have a lovely week and stay safe.

  11. Oh I'm sorry to hear about what's happening in France. I hope things get better there and soon! We've had our windows open too, it's been very warm here for a few days. what's going on with the weather haha?

I love the look of the Victorian mystery.

  12. You are serious about your Bronte mania! Good for you! I should listen to a few more. I've heard it's a bit chaos in France, feel so sorry for you all. South Africa is just lawless at best and everyone basically do what they want. Hence, numbers are spiking here again!

I don't know Ann Granger, but I am going to have a look right now.

We've watched a couple of episodes of Vexed. Loved it!! I need to watch it again.

Thanks for stopping by our blog earlier, hope to chat to you soon again!

  14. I can understand why you would be frustrated and angry with things going on in your country.

I've just added Return of the Soldier to my TBR. Thanks.

I hope to see Loving Vincent soon.

  15. That's awful about what's happening in your country. Sometimes it feels like this pandemic has brought the worst out in people more than the good. The schools in the area where I live are all still virtual except for a small few private schools which were able to get waivers from the state.

The Lizzie Martin series sounds like one I would really like. I hope you are enjoying Pachinko. I have that one on my TBR shelf and am looking forward to reading it.

I hope you have a great week. Happy Reading!
