(chronique en français)/If cats disappeared from the world ? (review in English)

Our narrator’s days are numbered. Estranged from his family, living alone with only his cat Cabbage for company, he was unprepared for the doctor’s diagnosis that he has only months to live. But before he can set about tackling his bucket list, the Devil appears with a special offer: in exchange for making one thing in the world disappear, he can have one extra day of life. And so begins a very bizarre week...

This little book wasn't an unanimous success. I didn't adore it either, but I really enjoyed it anyway !  I read it just after "How do you live ?" and it had something that its prestigious predecessor lacked : more cohesion.
Why did I buy this book ? Well, look at this cover, how could a cat lover who is also in love with Japanese literature resist ? Impossible ! Moreover, the book is short and cheap. I thought I would read some sort of tale for cat lovers, but in fact, the story dug a little deeper that I thought. The theme also reminded me of "How do you live ?" because honestly, what did the narrator do with his life ? Not much. It takes his imminent death for him to shrug out of his apathy, look around him and appreciate things, and at the same time the wisdom to accept death.
It's not the book of the year, but I enjoyed it and I ever teared up at a moment, it's more profound than his lighthearted, funny style gives away.

  2. Great bilingual review. I definitely want to read this one. Have you read The Memory Police? Things from the world start also disappearing on a regular basis... https://wordsandpeace.com/2019/08/05/book-review-the-memory-police/
